Simone Mareuil
Simone Mareuil ((:simɔn maʁøj); 25 August 1903 – 24 October 1954) was a French actress best known for appearing in the surrealist film ''Un Chien Andalou''.〔R. Bruce Elder, ''DADA, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect'', p. 615〕
Born Marie Louise Simone Vacher in Périgueux, Dordogne, she appeared in a number of films, most notably director Luis Buñuel’s ''Un Chien Andalou'' (''An Andalusian Dog'', 1929). She was the second wife of actor Philippe Hersent.〔(Simone Mareuil (1899-1954) )〕〔(Philippe Hersent (1912–1982) )〕
After World War II, she returned to Périgueux, where she fell into a deep depression.〔(List of actresses who committed suicide )〕〔(''A survey of key surrealist films and a look at alternative films that share in the surrealist sensibility'' ). “More disturbingly and strangely surrealistically, Simone Mareuil died via self-immolation with gasoline in a public square in Perigueux, her hometown.
